Ladies Ring 645-104 Citrine 1.75 carat Citrine color Sapphire
Ladies Ring 645-104 Citrine 1.75 carat Citrine color Sapphire
A very nice substantial solid 14kt Gold ring. The center gem is a Citrine colored Sapphire. Sapphire with a hardness of 9 is very much harder and tougher than a genuine Citrine. Citrine is a variety of Quartz, with a hardness of only 7....just a little more than glass (6.5). Sapphire is 9 which is right next to Diamond (10). Some people would compare this to Golden Topaz, but Golden Topaz still has a hardness of only 8.

You may wonder why we even bother to tell you this. The answer is because the hardness and toughness of a gem is a very important property. A lot of pretty gems are very soft and brittle. Those gems are best worn as earrings or pendants. A ring comes in contact with lots of 'hard' objects and thus is prone to being damaged much more often.

Tanzanite has a hardness of only 6.5. About the same as glass. We have lots of people come into our shop/factory/showroom with very sad faces. Their Tanzanite ring (generally bought at an inflated price on a cruise) is all 'worn down'. They ask us if we can fix it. Nope! Wish we could!
